What Kind of Generator Do You Need?
|
In our area of Virginia -- Essex County, the Northern Neck, and the Middle Peninsula --
power outages are a way of life. Whether it's a hurricane or ice storm you'll probably
need some kind of emergency power for your home.
But what kind of generator do you need?
There are two types: portable and standby.
Portable generators are just what their name suggests: you can
move them around where you need them. Most of the top
quality generators like Generac and Guardian offer a portable
model that comes with a rolling cart.
There are several sizes, though, so you'll want to make some
decisions before you go shopping:
- Medium Sized Generator -- This size generator will
usually power 3,000-6,000 watts in your home. It won't
power your entire household but you will be able to run
some critical things like the refrigerator, a sump pump, and
lights.
- Large Sized Generator -- 7,000-8,000 watts is what
you'll get from this workhorse. If you live in an older home
that's still using 100 amp service, you should be able to
power a good portion of your residence. Obviously, if you
have 200 amp service, this model will power less but will
still give you a good bang for your buck.
- Extra Large Sized Generator -- This is the Arnold
Schwarzenegger of portable generators. Powering
anywhere from 12,500-17,500 watts, you should be able
to cover most of your house with the exception of central
air conditioners.

A standby generator will be ideal for you if you'd rather not
deal with the work of setting up and starting a portable
generator.
When the power goes out the standby generator will kick on
automatically so you'll never have an interruption in your
service. When power is restored, the standby cuts off.
A standby generator is permanently installed outside your
home -- some can even be buried underground -- and works
just like a central air conditioner. These systems can be
connected to your LP or natural gas tank and will continue to
give you power as long as the fuel holds out.
Standby generator require no human intervention at all and will
come on when power goes out even when you're away from
home.
